Covers the management of wild capture fisheries: the biological basis for harvest limits, the assessment process that produces them, allocation among users, and the enforcement and compliance mechanisms that determine whether limits hold.

The course is co-taught by fisheries science and policy faculty, and includes a stock assessment that students work through themselves rather than receive as a summary. A management recommendation defended without an understanding of how its underlying estimate was produced, and how uncertain it is, is treated as unsupported.

Case material includes decisions in which the science and the outcome diverged, and students are required to identify where in the process the divergence occurred.
