Introduces the ocean as an integrated system. Covers the shape and origin of ocean basins, seawater composition and properties, the forces that drive circulation, waves and tides, and the distribution of marine life in relation to physical structure.

The course is required or recommended in every undergraduate program at the university, and is constructed accordingly: it assumes no prior science beyond high school and does not compromise on quantitative content. Students intending to continue in ocean science treat it as the entry point to the sequence. Students in policy and engineering treat it as the common vocabulary.

Includes one day trip aboard R/V *Cascadia Strait*. The trip is required and runs in all weather short of a small craft advisory.
