Covers the biology, ecology and identification of marine primary producers: phytoplankton, macroalgae, seagrasses and salt marsh vegetation. Addresses photosynthesis under water, nutrient uptake, and the physical constraints that determine where each group can live.

Substantial attention is given to habitat-forming species. Seagrass meadows and salt marshes support communities well beyond their own biomass, store carbon, and attenuate wave energy, which is why both are common targets for restoration. The course examines what a restored meadow does and does not reproduce.

Laboratory work includes algal identification and pigment analysis. Field sessions visit the seagrass restoration plots in the Aldwych estuary.
