Covers the application of molecular techniques to ecological questions in marine systems: population genetics, species identification, and environmental DNA. Laboratory work runs from sample collection and extraction through amplification, sequencing and analysis.

Environmental DNA receives the most attention, and so do its limits. Detection depends on how much genetic material an organism sheds, how rapidly that material degrades, and how the water moved in the interval. A negative result is frequently a statement about circulation rather than about the presence of an animal, and a positive result means little without a reference sequence of known provenance.

The laboratory component is substantial and requires careful technique. Contamination is the most common cause of a failed project.
