Covers the design and operation of remotely operated and autonomous underwater vehicles: pressure housings, buoyancy and trim, thrusters and control allocation, power systems, sensors, and the control and navigation problem in an environment without satellite positioning.

The course is built around a term-long team project in which students design, construct and test a vehicle. Sessions run weekly in the Marine Robotics and Test Basin throughout the term.

Failure is expected and is assessed. A team that documents why a vehicle failed and what was changed in response is credited more highly than one whose vehicle worked without the team being able to explain why. The basin exists so that these failures happen on a Tuesday afternoon rather than offshore.
