An autonomous glider operated jointly by the ocean science and marine engineering groups completed an eleven-day deployment across the shelf break in May, flying repeat sections without intervention and returning a complete dataset.

The scientific target is a problem of timing. Cross-shelf exchange — the movement of water between the shallow shelf and the deep ocean beyond — happens disproportionately in short, intense events that a monthly survey will miss. Being present for one has historically been a matter of luck.

"You stop trying to be there and you leave something there instead," said James McAllister, the doctoral student whose research the deployment supports. The glider caught two events during the eleven days.

The engineering side was the harder half. Samuel Hartley led the sensor integration, combining instruments with different power draws, timing assumptions and failure modes into a single payload that had to survive without attention. Two earlier deployments had returned partial records.

"The two that failed are more interesting than this one," Hartley said. "We know exactly why now."

The vehicle's navigation carries an explicit error estimate and is programmed to surface if that estimate degrades past a threshold — an approach the autonomy group has argued for on the grounds that a vehicle which knows it is lost is a working vehicle.

A longer deployment is planned for the fall.
