This page is the procedure. The [admissions page](/standard-page/admissions) covers what we look for and how the different programs differ.

## Undergraduate

**1. Choose your program.** You apply to a specific degree, not to the university generally. Program requirements differ — check the page for the one you want before you start.

**2. Submit the application.** Through the common application or directly through our own form, whichever you prefer. There is no advantage to either.

**3. Send transcripts.** Official high school transcripts, and college transcripts if you have taken any coursework. Transfer applicants should send everything.

**4. Write the personal statement.** One to two pages. Tell us why this subject and why a specialized institution. We read these properly.

**5. One letter of recommendation.** From a teacher in a relevant subject where possible. One good letter is better than three general ones.

**6. File for financial aid separately, and early.** The aid deadline is 1 February and runs ahead of the admission timeline. Do not wait for an admission decision.

Standardized test scores are optional and considered where submitted.

**Deadlines.** 15 January for fall entry. 1 October for spring entry, available in Environmental Science and Marine Policy only.

## Graduate

**1. Contact a prospective supervisor first** if you are applying to the doctoral program or to either research master's. This is not a formality — for the doctorate, the admission decision is made by the supervisor.

**2. Submit the application** with transcripts, a research or professional statement, and a curriculum vitae.

**3. Three letters of recommendation.** Academic references for research programs; professional references are appropriate for the professional master's programs.

**4. English language testing** if your degree was not taught in English.

**Deadline.** 15 January for fall entry, all graduate programs.

## Transfer applicants

We accept transfer students into all undergraduate programs. Credit is evaluated course by course after admission, and laboratory and field courses transfer less predictably than lecture courses — ask before assuming.

## International applicants

Applications follow the same process with the addition of English language testing and, after admission, visa documentation. The admissions office handles the second and can talk you through the timeline, which is longer than most applicants expect.

## After you apply

Undergraduate decisions go out from mid-March. Graduate decisions vary by program and supervisor availability, usually between February and April.
