Develops the physical description of ocean circulation from first principles. Covers the equations of motion in a rotating frame, geostrophic balance, Ekman transport and pumping, vorticity, and the wind-driven and thermohaline circulations.
The course is mathematical from the first week and assumes calculus in working order. Students who have not used calculus recently should revise before the term begins rather than during it.
Coastal and shelf dynamics are treated in the final third, including cross-shelf exchange and the short, intense events that account for a disproportionate share of the total transport. Data from the department's mooring and glider deployments are used throughout, with their gaps intact.
