Northmoor University conferred degrees on 16 May in a ceremony held on the waterfront lawn, with graduates from all twelve programs.
The class included the first five graduates of the MS in Marine Mammal Science, a program that admitted its first students two years ago. All five have taken positions in assessment, consulting, conservation or doctoral study.
The address was given by a 1998 graduate of the oceanography program who now directs a regional ocean observing system. Her theme was the long timescale of the work: the moorings she helped deploy as a graduate student are still producing the records that current students analyze, and the value of that continuity was invisible to her at the time.
Departmental prizes were awarded in each of the four departments. The university's teaching prize went to a member of the ocean science faculty, cited in particular for the data analysis course that every ocean science undergraduate now takes and that was, when introduced, unpopular.
The ceremony ran without rain, which the university's official history records as unusual.
