Conference

An evening reception for alumni, held after the fall open day closes.

Final-year undergraduates and graduate students are invited alongside alumni, and the event is arranged around that rather than around alumni catching up with each other. Attendance is weighted toward people working in agencies, consultancies, industry and nonprofits in the region — the organizations current students are about to apply to.

There is no program. No speeches, no panel, no name badges colored by graduating year. Departmental staff are present to make introductions where they can be useful, and the recurring feedback is that this is the only part that needs organizing.

Attending

Alumni of any program and any year are welcome. Current final-year students attend free and should register through their department so that numbers are known.

Refreshments are provided. The reception is held in the Halloran Building atrium, which is fully accessible.

Anyone attending the open day earlier in the day is welcome to stay on. There is a gap between the two, and the campus coffee shop stays open.

The third Coastal Resilience Conference runs over two days in November, hosted jointly by the Department of Marine Policy and Economics and the Department of Ocean and Earth Sciences.

The conference is deliberately mixed. Roughly half the attendance is practitioners — municipal planners, emergency managers, coastal engineers, state agency staff — and half is researchers. The program is built so that the two halves are in the same rooms rather than in parallel tracks.

Program

Day one covers the science: regional sea level projection, storm climatology, and shoreline and wetland response. The closing session of the day is on uncertainty communication, and is run as a workshop rather than a panel.

Day two covers decisions: planning and zoning instruments, financing and insurance, managed retreat, and a closing session of case presentations from municipalities in the region describing what they have actually done.

Registration

Registration is $180 for general attendance and $40 for students, and includes lunch on both days. The student rate applies to anyone currently enrolled anywhere, not only at Northmoor.

Remote attendance is available for the plenary sessions at the same rates. The workshop sessions are in person only.

Registration closes on 30 October, or earlier if capacity is reached.

Getting here

The conference is held in the Halloran Building. Visitor parking is signposted from the north entrance. Accommodation in town books up in November; delegates travelling from a distance should arrange it early.
